Write down all of the assignments you need to do in a notebook. Some schools may pass them out at the beginning of the year. If your school doesn’t, you can buy a relatively cheap one from stores like Target or Office Max. Ask a teacher for suggestions.
Don’t fall behind. Get assignments done when they’re assigned. To keep yourself motivated, set goals. For example, you could try to get your math homework by the time you finish five songs on your favorite CD.
Get enough sleep: try to get at least seven hours of sleep. Teenagers especially need LOTS of sleep to be alert in the morning. Getting sufficient sleep will help you focus in school.
Try to complete your work while you have time in school.
Understand it. You really want to understand what your homework is so that you know what to do when you get home or your dorm. If you don’t, ask someone. There is no harm in asking a teacher or someone else for help. Do not simply ask for answers, however: answers on homework will not help you understand what will be on the test.
Go to review sessions when teachers offer. The review questions that they ask will be similar to the ones on the test.
Know your grades. When the teacher offers to tell everyone their grade, find out or grade. Some schools allow their students to access their grades online. Take advantage if your school offers it.

If you get a bad grade on a test or assignment, don’t freak out. Ask your teacher about the questions you got wrong, if you don’t understand them.
Work on schoolwork at a place you can concentrate. Listen to music if it helps.
Pay attention to the teacher. She or he is there to teach you the material, and by paying attention to what they place emphasis on, you can tell what will be on the test.
Study material gradually over time with spaced repetitions: do not cram the night before a test.
Take clear, concise notes. Go for quality, not quantity.
Try to get on the teachers good side by not annoying them. You also should act how you think a good student should act. If you are on their good side they will be more willing to help you.
Don’t be discouraged by people saying you’re not smart.
Don’t mess around when the teacher is talking.
If someone is talking to you while the teacher is talking, politely ask them to stop, or quietly and kindly asking them if you could answer the question at a different time.
