Laptop going through airport security?

I know they must xray it, will this drain battery, corrupt/erase data? Should I just leave it home? Also, one carryon bag, one personal item each? Can this mean a small suitcase and a purse. Can the laptop be a personal item? Thanks in advance, I never fly.

Don’t worry, many thousands of people fly with laptops every day and have no problems. When you get to the security screening, they want you to take the laptop out of whatever bag or case it is in and place it, by itself, into one of the plastic bins so its image shows up by itself on the x-ray. Don’t put your purse or shoes or coat or anything into the same bin as the laptop.

Just be sure to remember to pick it up on the other side (you would be surprised at how many people forget!).

A carry on suitcase and a purse are just fine as your two carry on items.

Will your laptop fit into your suitcase? Do you have a laptop case, computer bag or something like that? A suitcase and a laptop bag are also fine. If you have that, you may want to put your purse into the laptop bag – if it fits, or into your suitcase when you go through the security checkpoint.

If your purse is small, then I think you could probably carry all three – suitcase, laptop bag, purse, but if it is big, the gate agent might object. See if, for the purposes of getting onto the plane, you can reduce the physical number of items to just 2. Take you purse out if you want it, after getting on-board.

If you will need your laptop, or just want to have it with you, by all means, take it. If it will make your luggage too heavy to carry comfortably or you won’t actually need the laptop, then I suppose you should leave it at home. The less you have with you to carry and keep track of, the simpler the travel will be.
