Computer is only recording internal sound?

i recently got a logitech webcam and it came with a mic/headphone set. the problem is that my computer is only recording internal sound not external! when i open my Realtek audio manager, it says the mic is plugged in when the headset isnt even plugged into the jack yet! right now it even says there is a mic plugged in but there is nothing plugged in. how can i make it so that my computer can record external sound?

On the back of the computers there are two different holes. One is for headphones, the other is for a microphone

Since you dont know which one is which try both.
and then u can use whatever programs you like (aka audacity) to record
